I don’t know about you, but don’t you guys feel as if Jake is just dating Dirk out of convenience? The part where he said he would easily back out if Jane likes Dirk made me feel uneasy. Usually if you legitimately like the person, there would be some hesitance - but that is only when the importance for both relationships are equal or if the love interest isn’t attracted to you so you’d give up because you have no or little chance in a relationship. Or it could also go down the “Let the best man/woman, win.” route. But in Jake’s case, he knows fully well that Dirk likes him, so it doesn’t make any sense that he would let go of that advantage - if he likes him back too.
So I really doubt Jake likes Dirk to that extent. He is a bit self-absorbed, but it doesn’t mean you can just easily let go of a relationship if you love them.
Dirk, you poor boy.
Jake isn’t a jerk. He may act like a dick, but then I thought about it.
He is a jerk when he intentionally ignores other people’s feelings AND he is conscious about it. The thing here is, he isn’t. So I have come upon a conclusion that Jake is just an airhead who has difficulty assessing the situation.
There you have it folks. Jake is your stereotypical airhead character in a shoujo anime.

I’m tired but I still have a bit of sugar rush running through my brain so…
Roxy and Dirk would be living in a pretty desolate future. Millions of years ahead, humans have contacted a rampant virus that killed of millions of people each year. Everyone was desperate for a cure. Researchers tried everything and as a last result, they tried creating the “perfect anti-virus”. They created two children from scratch. Test tube babies if you would call it…their DNAs were made so it would be immune to the virus. To ensure that the two of them would survive and copulate to continue the human species, the scientists made sure to grace them with inhuman genes - through scientific manipulation. Roxy and Dirk was born.
Years later, every human being died. Except for the two of them. With their ridiculously high IQs and inhuman physique, they lived healthy lives - yet they were loney since they are still children after all. Roxy has taken a liking to the work the deceased researchers had done. Everyday she drowned herself in between stacks of research papers and science equipments, fascinated and piqued by her natural curiousity. She learned how to genetically grow different kinds of plants from scratch - thus giving both of them some food to eat. Dirk was more into tinkering. He was more concerned about fixing the mechanics of the place. He was an all around handyman of some sorts and even made assistant robots to help him with everyday chores.
One day, an idea emerged. They built a time machine. It wasn’t impossible with both of their skills.
Year 2012, Jane Crocker is a normal student. Perhaps, a bit higher up on the social ladder with her rich entrepreneur family. She has been crushing on this transfer student from Australia for quite a while now - so far she had managed to become his friend. Jake English had spent his entire life travelling from one country to another because of his grandma’s job. He doesn’t mind it, after all, he loves adventures. However, from the looks of it, it seems like he is going to stay put for a while in this country.
One particularly hot afternoon, the two of them decided to take a stroll. Isn’t that what friends do? Anyways, they are taking their stroll when a lighting striked during a bright and sunny day. When they looked down, they saw two adolescents around their age - unconscious. Jake wanted to help - deeming the thought interesting, and Jane was too cautious, yet gave in anyways. The two blonde strangers were sent to a hospital under Jane’s family. They remained in coma for three days, on the fourth day, they opened their eyes.
They say they remember nothing. No memories whatsoever.
